Madison, Wis. – John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Joyce Weise, 63, Madison, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge William Conley to one year and one day in jail for conversion of government retirement funds.

The widow of a retired teacher scammed the city out of $218,000 in pension payments by claiming for 21 years that her dead husband was still alive, investigators said.

Jamie Stanley was arrested Thursday in Pennsylvania, where she lives, on charges of mail fraud and two counts of identity theft.

ALBANY — Metro-North Railroad construction workers received more than $1 million last year in “avoidable” overtime and “rest shifts,” according to a state audit released Wednesday.

Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said supervisors and employees at Metro-North’s 30-member Signal Construction Unit for the Hudson and Harlem lines abused overtime rules to inflate their salaries and pensions.

Railroad Pension Fraud Scam May Have cost $1 Billion

Todays “Fraud of the Day” is based on an article entitled, “11 charged in massive $1B LIRR pension fraud: feds,” by Bruce Golding, published by the New York Post, Oct 27, 2011.

Eleven people, including a former union president and two orthopedists, were slapped with fraud charges today in connection with a massive pension scam involving fake disability claims by Long Island Rail Road workers that COULD cost the agency $1 billion, authorities said.

Ten of the 11 suspects — which also include seven former LIRR workers accused of making false pension claims and a former federal railroad pension agency employee — were busted this morning by the FBI for their involvement in the alleged long-running swindle.
